Yingying Zhang abductor now charged with her death

It is being reported on October 3, 2017 that the main suspect in the disappearance of Chinese exchange student, Yingying Zhang, has received new charges.  The federal grand jury indicted Brendt Christensen on kidnapping in an “especially heinous, cruel or depraved manner” resulting in her death.  He was already charged with kidnapping but now they have added death.

Yingying Zhang abductor pleads ‘Not guilty’ back in court August 28

It is being reported on July 20, 2017 that the man charged with kidnapping Chinese scholar Yingying Zhang was arraigned in federal court today.  Brendt Christensen spoke briefly, entering a plea of “not guilty.”

UPDATE 11-July-17:  It is being reported that authorities have concluded that Yingying Zhang was not in Salem, IL.

“Salem Police Detective Bryan Green . . . traveled to Champaign Tuesday to meet with the parents of 26-year-old Yingying Zhang to show them video surveillance of the woman who apparently had been mistaken for her daughter. Green says they were able to see the woman in the video was not their daughter.”

The FBI has already stated that they believe missing student Yingying Zhang is no longer alive.  Authorities do not make this statement lightly.

Alleged Yingying Zhang abductor was looking for next victim at vigil

It is being reported on July 5, 2017 that that man accused of abducting University of Illinois visiting scholar Yingying Zhang appeared in court today regarding bail.  During the hearing, more evidence that the FBI obtained was released to the public. Judge Eric Long denied Brendt Christensen bail after finding him a flight risk and a danger to the community.

July 14th trial date set for man who abducted Yingying Zhang

UPDATE 12-July -2017:  It is being reported that a grand jury indicted Brendt Christensen on kidnapping charges.  The July 14th preliminary trial has been canceled.  Next trial date is July 20, 2017.

It is being reported on July 3, 2017 that Brendt Christensen will stand trial beginning on July 14, 2017.  “Christensen is scheduled to attend a bond hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Eric Long on Wednesday. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 14.”  Christensen is accused of kidnapping Chinese visiting scholar Yingying Zhang.  Both attended the University of Illinois.

The man charged with Yingying Zhang’s disappearance, Brendt Allen Christensen, is originally from Stevens Point, Wisconsin.  According to his Facebook, most of which has been deleted, he is married.

Three weeks later authorities still searching for missing Univ of IL scholar Yingying Zhang

26-year-old Yingying Zhang who moved to the University of Illinois last April, went missing on June 9, 2017.  According to reports, she was last seen on her way to sign a lease to a new apartment when she was captured on security cameras getting into a black Saturn Astra automobile.  It has been speculated that the car she entered was an arranged taxi service.
