On September 12, 2017 the trial for Anna Weier began in Wisconsin. Weier and her friend Morgan Geyser are being tried as adults for stabbing their friend Peyton Leutner in 2014. The girls were all 12 years old at the time of the attack. Leutner was struck 19 times but survived.
Last month Weier pled guilty to second degree homicide. Yesterday her trial began in order to determine:
- At the time of the crime did Weier have a mental disease or defect
- As a result of mental disease or defect, was she able to appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions and conform to the requirements of the law
Anissa’s father testified as well as two other friends who were aware of Anissa’s interest in Slenderman. A teacher testified that Anissa was intelligent and was well-behaved. None of her teachers noticed anything that indicated that she and Morgan would become violent.
Anissa’s school notebooks, filled with drawings of Slenderman were shown in court (see slideshow.) Her internet activity included large amounts of time on the Wiki creepypasta website where Slenderman and other characters are portrayed as real.
The police officer who found Anissa and Morgan after the attack as well as the detective on the case, Thomas Casey, also took the stand. Both officers said that the girls behaved normally and were cooperative. The detective stated that he read through her internet activities and noticed searches for ‘how to get away with murder.’
Det. Casey also said that during questioning, Morgan appeared to be trying to shift all of the blame for the attack onto Anissa.
