Oscar Pistorius gets surprise release into house arrest

It is being reported on October 20, 2015 that Oscar Pistorius is scheduled to be released from prison next Tuesday. He will begin house arrest on October 20, 2015. A South African parole board decided to release Pistorius one year into his five year sentence for murdering Reeva Steenkamp.

“Criminal lawyer David Dadic said: ‘He’s not ‘out’ on parole … he’s having his sentence converted to a house arrest sentence. He’s now confined to a house for a period. They’ll confine him essentially to what he would be doing in prison but in the confines of his own house.'”

The former Olympic athlete, who was found guilty of manslaughter for shooting his girlfriend to death on February 14, 2013.  Pistorius, 28, shot his girlfriend multiple times while she was in the bathroom with the door locked.  He claims that he thought she was an intruder.

Pistorius has served one year in jail and will now spend the rest of his sentence under what is termed in South Africa “correctional supervision.”

The murder victim’s family have voiced their opinion that ten months is not enough for murdering their daughter.   “Steenkamp’s parents say Pistorius killed their daughter on purpose and have consistently opposed parole.”

Pistorius will have restrictions on gun ownership and receiving psychotherapy while under house arrest.
