Oscar Pistorius parole hearing on Sept 18

It is being reported on August 27, 2015 that the South African parole board which decides when Oscar Pistorius can be released, will meet to decide on September 18, 2015.

The board had met last June and decided to release the double amputee former Olympic runner in August but changed their minds.  Pistorius was found guilty of  ‘culpable homicide’ in the killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in September 2014.  He was sentenced to five years or 60 months.

After serving one-sixth of his sentence he was eligible for parole and was originally scheduled to be released on August 21, 2015.  Due to public outcry at his early release which was so close to Reeva’s birthday on August 23rd and during ‘Women’s month’ which is celebrated in August.

“Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha — who was urged by a women’s group to halt the transfer — said that according to his reading of the law, the board shouldn’t have even considered the transfer until the 10-month mark.”

Pistorius, now 28, confessed to shooting Reeva Steenkamp multiple times through a bathroom door.  He claimed that he thought she was an intruder.

Prosecutors are appealing the manslaughter verdict and hope to charge him with premeditated murder.  The appeals trial is set to start in November 2015.
