It is being reported on December 22, 2015 that a 57-year-old woman suffering from breathing problems was found stable by doctors and discharged. When she refused to leave because she still felt unwell, the police were called in to arrest her for disorderly conduct.
As police were taking her to the station, she collapsed and died. “Barbara Dawson, 57, collapsed Monday while being escorted in handcuffs from the Liberty Calhoun Hospital, where she went to seek treatment for breathing difficulties, said Blountstown Police Department chief Mark Mallory.”
An autopsy is being performed to figure out what went wrong. Dawson was wearing handcuffs when she collapsed. The officer removed them and returned her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
“Dawson’s relatives maintain that Barbara pleaded with Liberty Calhoun Hospital staff to return ‘her oxygen tank’ because she was still having difficulty breathing. According to statements made by her family, which could likely be cited in a civil lawsuit filed against the medical care facility, after she was handcuffed and escorted outside, Dawson once again ‘begged for oxygen.’”
Liberty Calhoun Hospital did not return phone calls Tuesday night to answer questions regarding the incident. The autopsy report from the hospital is expected to be released on Wednesday.
