It is being reported on June 30, 2016 that Rudy Guede, co-defendant in the trial for the murder of Meredith Kercher, is going to request to appeal his conviction. Rudy Guede was charged with killing Meredith Kercher along with Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito in 2007.
Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were acquitted of murder in 2015, due to insufficient evidence. Amanda Knox remains convicted for criminal slander or calunnia. Rudy Guede was found only to be an accomplice to the crime and not the one who wielded the murder weapon – a knife. Since Knox and Sollecito have been freed it leaves Guede an accomplice to no one.
Therefore, Guede and his legal team will ask for a retrial.
“The request will be presented to the Florence Court of Assizes of Appeal by the end of July, Guede’s press office said.”
Unlike his co-defendants, Rudy Guede has not profited from the crime. He did not accept any money for the interview he gave last January to Franca Leosino of RAI 3 TV. In that interview, Guede stated that he was “101%” certain that Amanda Knox was there at the time of the murder. He also said that he heard Amanda Knox and Meredith Kercher fighting.
Knox and Sollecito have made millions from the crime. Sollecito even appeared on Italian television as a legal expert. A move which inspired an Italian woman to start a Change.org petition to request that Sollecito be fired from the program. At the time of this writing, the petition has collected almost 24,000 signatures.
