If you think you know all there is to know about the Meredith Kercher murder case, Nick van der Leek will make you think again. This South African author has written an ebook about the case titled DECEIT that has everyone atwitter. Mr. van der Leek analyzes the events surrounding Meredith Kercher’s brutal murder like no other writer has done for the past eight years.
Nick does not try to persuade the reader in either direction as most of the other publications about the case have done. He goes through the events scientifically, tracing the cell phone traffic and cross-referencing it with the time line of the crime, court transcripts and other officially documented evidence.
“The author has endeavoured to study both sides of the ‘divide’, the so-called ‘guilters’, and the ‘Pro Knoxers’. As with many similar high profile court cases, there is invariably a group of die-hard supporters who ‘believe’ what they believe despite evidence, facts or sensibility to the contrary.”
Mr. van der Leek is no stranger to high profile crimes and their cyberspace clashes. He and Lisa Wilson have written no less than four books about Jodi Arias’s case along with eight books about Oscar Pistorius.
His first foray into the case of Meredith Kercher’s homicide with his ebook DECEIT has been nothing short of explosive. As a result, the divisiveness of this case has spewed onto Amazon.com.
One look at DECEIT’s ratings on Amazon and the uninitiated may be led to believe his reviewers are reading two different books. The overwhelming majority are either the best (5 stars) or the worse (1 star) rating.
One explanation for the overabundance of low ratings is that public relation (PR) and other cutthroat trolls who support the murder suspects have skewered the book in their reviews in a vain attempt to stanch the truth from leaking out.
Nick writes in DECEIT,
”While it is not the purpose of this narrative to cheerlead either side, or even either former defendants, it is the position of the narrative and the author, that the evidence is – as it usually is – ‘self-evident’ …the interrogation of the facts does tend to draw a narrative into a particular direction.”
And indeed it does. While delineating the cell phone data and time line doesn’t sound very captivating, the revelations are clear, persuasive, and shocking. For example, Van der Leek discovers a believed error by the judges who decided this case.
“It appears Judge Massei … made an error. He got mixed up and switched the locations of the two text messages around.. the second Judge, Nencini, repeated the same error as Massei.”
A possible misinterpretation by the Italian courts concerning cell phone tower pings which reveal the locations of the main players during the course of this crime has come to light. The fact that it was this particular text message that led Amanda Knox to falsely implicate Patrick Lumumba for the crime makes it all the more intriguing.
Could this surprising fact help to provide a basis to reopen this case which has tilted the scales of justice from guilty to not guilty an equal number of times? Time will tell just as the time line of this crime has divulged so much.
