Amanda Knox asks Italian courts for ‘annulamento’

Everything seemed to have quieted down after Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito‘s guilty convictions for their involvement in the murder of Meredith Kercher were confirmed last January 30, 2014. They were each given sentences of 28 and 25 years respectively.

However, on June 16, 2014 Knox and Sollecito requested another appeal from the Italian court of Cassation or Supreme court. Through their lawyers they requested an ‘annullamento’ or annulment of their previous guilty convictions. In addition they also requested legal ‘absolution’ or an acquittal of their crimes. This ‘absolution’ or complete clearing of any guilt, would not allow Knox to avoid paying Patrick Lumumba the court ordered fees for falsely accusing him of the murder.

All of these trials have led to some confusion in the U.S. This cultural divide has been cleverly manipulated by Amanda Knox’s media campaign and supporters who spread misinformation about the case. Those who seek justice for the victim, Meredith Kercher, have had to combat their misleading media initiatives in order to get the truth out.

One of the results of this battle has been the creation of two websites about the murder of Meredith Kercher. Translated court documents, trial testimonies and the facts of the case may be found at: themurderof meredithkercher.com.

Meanwhile a copycat website published by Knox’s supporters and filled with misinformation in order to mislead readers by using the same URL minus the word ‘the’ in front. These are the tactics of Amanda Knox’s media campaign.

Amanda Knox’s legal saga is succinctly described on themurderof meredithkercher.com:

“The trial of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito was held in 2009, and it lasted almost the whole year. At the end they were found provisionally guilty, subject to appeal. In 2011, the appeal was held and found them provisionally innocent, again subject to appeal to the Supreme Court (Corte Suprema di Cassazione). In March 2013, the Supreme Court examined the case and quashed the findings of the appeal court. The Supreme Court can only rule on matters of law, not of fact, and it concluded that the application of law, by the appeal court, had been so poor that the entire appeal needed to be reheard.”

This means that Knox and Sollecito stand provisionally guilty until later this year or early next year. This is their last available appeal which they have requested today.

It is important to note that Knox and Sollecito have asked for this next appeals trial. They are not being dragged back into court by Italy, a lie that some of their supporters have claimed in the past.

Knox and Sollecito’s final guilty verdict is expected to be announced by the end of 2014 to early 2015. Sollecito has already surrendered his passport. This means that unless he flees the country surreptitiously, he will go directly to prison after his conviction is final.

Knox may also be required to report to prison in the U.S. or in Italy. It all depends on if the Italian court decides to request her extradition. If they do, it will generate an arrest warrant for her. Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz said on CNN it is possible that the Italian courts may be satisfied with her not being able to travel internationally after her conviction is final. Therefore, the Italian courts may not bother extraditing her. Knox would remain a ‘prisoner’ within the borders of her home country for the rest of her life.
